Monster Jam Driver Lineup 2010

From streets to homes: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In the neighborhoods of Ipanema and Leblon Rio de Janeiro there is a good example of operation of streets and quality public spaces. From my perspective this is due to the following reasons:

1 .- They are functional. Have a size large enough for pedestrians and bicycles, are able to combine both activities. They are also sufficiently low and flat to be accessible for any person, whether a child or elderly person.
2 .- All the facilities are underground, no poles duplicate or triplicate as in many parts of Mexico. The sidewalk material is simple, easy installation and maintenance.

3 .- They provide a consistent image in all the banquettes, which helps create a common aesthetic and a sense of unique identity of the neighborhood.

4 .- The design of buildings and their entries are such that it appears that the sidewalk into homes and buildings, either by the depot or the reception. This helps to integrate the buildings with the streets, creating an image not only aesthetically pleasing, also encouraging the use and care of public space. This is also achieved with transitions between public and private space with nice items like planters, large trees or fences that allow views in both directions.

5.-It integrates urban art, graffiti, as part of the image, to be an asset, and not one that degrade the area.

6.-It has a large amount of green space.

These elements can provide a good service of public space for slum dwellers and visitors, which makes these places in high demand (they are very popular suburbs).

From these examples we can learn a lot for the City Mexico, which has a lot of problems with the provision and quality of public space. (See the big difference here.)
